I first heard this John Abercrombie song when I was in college at Berklee in Boston. I wrote the lyrics then, and always included it in my repertoire for years. When I did this project originally, i wanted to include England's sweetheart modern jazz singer, Norma Winstone, in it. She knew this song because she had worked across the hall from John for a week, and had heard him play it every night. She and I are from a similar musical universe, and we even had such similar tone, the engineers had to really define our differences so we would stand out. Great fun. Almost my favorite cut!
lyrics
Hippityville
By John Abercrombie, Cathy Segal-Garcia
He’s here again, He’s here again now!
I see him walk, I hear him talking…
What’d he say?
The way he move, and what he do,
It’s all in here, it’s very clear.
I see him, I hear him…
“Hello! What d’ya know?
I’m hip, on the go.
I’m smart, I’m cool.
I walk hip, I talk smooth.
Know who you are,
Act smart, go far…
Look out, all around.
You’re smart, play the part!”
Goin on down to Hippityville!
It’s the place you act smart,
Walk smooth,
Talk hip,
Play it cool.
Gonna find a state of mind…
Nice thoughts, Cool tunes,
Hip chicks, Smart dudes,
Slow talk, Smooth moves…
Goin on down to Hippityville!
When you go you’ll look ‘round,
Blow down,
Hang out,
Round town.
Once you find your way, you’re home…
Home free, like me!
Walk how he walk,
Talk how he talk,
See how he move,
Look how he groove,
Be like the man,
And if you can,
Walk how he walk,
Talk how he talk.
Goin on down to Hippityville…
It’s the place you act smart,
Walk smooth,
Talk hip,
Play it cool.
Once you find your way, you’re home…
Home free, like me!
