I Love You 05:34
I love you come the April breeze I love you echoes the hills I love you the golden dawn agrees As once more she sees daffodils It's spring again And birds on the wing again Start to sing again The old melody I love you That's song of songs And it all belongs to you and me!

Ruby My Dear 06:49
Ruby, My Dear Hold back that tear ….. I know he’s gone Your love has flown …. You’re all alone …..Oh, I know you cry …….There’s no reply Pain lingers on …. It doesn’t go Cos you’ll say so One day he came to you …..And made the music play In his way You said you’d rather die …..Than say goodbye But there’ll come a day…Though he’s away You’ll sing his song ……You’ll carry on Ruby, My Dear

The Room 05:08
The place where I live is a quiet haven It’s quiet and dark, in a room full of light. The air is as clear as an open meadow And that’s where I hear your voice calling out love. My heart calls your name with a fervent whisper! Searching the land for the thought of your face My hands reach the ends of the room in a dither For you are now gone in this time and this place For you are now gone and my heart has an aching You are not here and I cry for you touch I know I can feel you near me in spirit But I miss you my darling I miss you so much

Bonita 08:32
What can I say to you, Bonita? What magic words would capture you? Like a soft evasive mist You are, Bonita You fly away when love is new What do you ask of me, Bonita? What part do you want me to play? Shall I be the clown for you, Bonita? I will do anything you say Bonita, don't run away, Bonita Bonita, don't be afraid to fall in love with me I love you, I tell you, I love you, I love you Bonita If you loved me, life would be beautiful Bonita...

Who can know just what the soul needs Search and look until your heart bleeds Deeply hoping Always aching For creations as we’re sleeping Through the world we’re ever dreaming Never stopping Always reaching ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Something we may never know… We’ll be searching til the end. Open books…you’ll never find the key That hides the mystery. Something we may never hear As we play and we pretend… Send a song, But it returns alone… Just an echo of our own. Will we ever get to know anymore? Will we never find the why and what for? Through the world we’re wandering… Lights before our eyes. Seeking in the darkness Where the deepest secret lies. Something we may never find… Though we hope at every bend. Just a sign, And time to count upon. With this, we travel on………….. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Who can know just what the soul needs? Search and look until your heart bleeds Deeply hoping, always aching For creations as we’re sleeping Through the world we’re ever dreaming Never stopping, always reaching.

I want to be happy But I won't be happy Till I make you happy, too Life's really worth living When we are mirth-giving Why can't I give some to you? When skies are gray And you say you are blue I'll send the sun smiling through I want to be happy But I won't be happy Till I make you happy, too

Once I laughed when I heard you saying That I’d be playing solitaire Uneasy in my easy chair… It never entered my mind. Once you told me, I was mistaken That I’d awaken with the sun And order OJ for one…. It never entered my mind. You have what I lack myself And now I even have to scratch my back myself Once you warned me that if you scorned me I’d sing the maiden’s prayer again And wish that you were there again To get into my hair again…. It never entered my mind.

Sleep in peace my baby To a lullabye While you sleep The troubles of your day Are far behind Got to sleep my darling Sothe away the frowns I will bring your fav’rite angel wings; Soft as a cloud And you may dream of a starry nite Where you will fly, far away Heavenly melodies Will sing to you this day Joyful the moment Eager is your heart Tender the treasure Lovingly you part Saddened is your heart To waken Now!

When he played, we heard the music singing And with each song he showed us places rarely seen before He’s been gone somewhere Oh life’s not fair But be glad we had him for a while He looked inside, deep inside, to get his song So what’s there to say, turn out the stars And look up at that night sky And you may hear a song so pure your heart would jump for joy And you’ll soon agree that it’s plain to see That if you’ve got time to kill It would be well spent looking for Bill...

Song of my heart Love of my life My heart is open now All of the time! You spoke to me, And I to you, I’ve always dreamed this dream Would now come true! I came from silent rooms, Walked through the door. That’s when I heard silence roar! Your whisper, all alone, Called out my name. Then I was not the same!

Ruby 07:55
They say, Ruby, you’re like a dream Not always what you seem And though my heart may break when I awake, Let it be so, I only know, Ruby, it’s you! They say, Ruby, you’re like a song, You don’t know right from wrong, And in your eyes I see Heartache for me Right from the start, who stole my heart? Ruby, it’s you! I hear your voice, and I must come to you…. I have no choice, what else can I do? They say, Ruby, you’re like a flame Into my life you came, And though I should beware, still I don’t care You thrill me so, I only know, Ruby, it’s you.

Small Hotel 05:01
There's a small hotel With a wishing well I wish that we were there together There's a bridal suite One room bright and neat Complete for us to share together Looking through the window You can see a distant steeple Not a sign of people who wants people? When the steeple bell says "Good night, sleep well" We'll thank the small hotel together

Mary O’Shaunessy On the road to Thomastown A way from Kilkinny, Behind the trees Mary O’Shaunessy She’s everybody’s mother A touch on your shoulder can help you see… She sits in the chair that her lov’d husband made Watching the grandchildren play in the shade. The years have since passed that her sons have all grown And time is the one true friend she’s ever known Her in her little chair Long after night has come Mary is wondering, just where has the time all gone? Dreaming of faraway places she’s never seen Happy with dream And the life that has always been. Mary O’Shaunessy On the road to Thomastown A way from Kilkinny, Behind the trees The light in her eyes tells you life will go on No matter the sorrows or loss that ou’ve known A touch of her hand and a soft spoken word Seems like the sweetest thing you’ve ever heard… Mary sits down in her chair in her little home “Time’s like an enemy only when you’re alone.” Life will move on like a river that flows… Into it, everyone goes!”

America 05:11
Oh beautiful for spacious skies For amber waves of grain For purple mountain majesties, above the fruited plain America, America, god shed his grace on thee And crown thy good with brotherhood From sea to shining sea Oh beautiful for patriot dream That sees beyond the years Thine alabaster cities gleam Undimmed by human tears America, America, god shed his grace on thee And crown thy good with brotherhood From sea to shining sea

about

On IN2UITION, vocalist CATHY SEGAL-GARCIA teams up with some of the finest pianists on the scene today to create an album of stunning jazz duets. Segal-Garcia is a stalwart on the Los Angeles scene. She’s not only a highly creative singer who’s not afraid to take chances and push the musical envelope, she’s also a songwriter, teacher, impresario, and jazz writer.

IN2UITION is Segal-Garcia’s 10th album as a leader. Although she sets the tone and direction for each recording, Segal-Garcia approaches every project as a truly collaborative effort. An instinctive improviser, she’s always seeking new modes of expression and considers each of her recordings a snapshot of where she was musically at that moment in time.

She has always been particularly drawn to the duo setting. According to Segal-Garcia, “I really love the intimacy of performing as a duo, because it allows you to establish a deep musical dialog. But duos are actually quite demanding. When there’s just the two of you, you can explore new ideas and change direction in just an instant. It gives you a lot of freedom, but it also requires you to be hyper-aware and tuned into the other person at every moment, because there’s no band to support you.”

IN2UITION is a 2-CD set of 14 songs comprising both well-known standards by the likes of Cole Porter, Thelonious Monk, Rodgers & Hart, and others, as well as original tunes by Segal-Garcia and one by BEVAN MANSON, the superb pianist who provides accompaniment on “Looking for Bill,” the tune he composed and dedicated to Bill Evans.

Segal-Garcia has a warm, alto voice. She can really swing, as she demonstrates on Cole Porter’s “I Love You,” which she performs with JOSH NELSON, the very creative, rising jazz star who was just featured on NPR’s Jazz Night in America. She can also render a ballad with great depth and sensitivity, which she does on Rodgers & Hart’s “It Never Entered My Mind.” She performs that tune accompanied by DAVE MOSCOE, a local L.A. treasure and popular musical partner for singers. The 11 accompanists she chose for this project are diverse in their approach to music, but are all highly respected and leaders in their own right. Finding common musical ground among such a diversified group of musicians is a testament to Segal-Garcia’s talents, openness, and daring.

Segal-Garcia is a consummate jazz artist who can adjust to the demands of any musical approach, whether she’s singing a soulful rendition of the Monk tune “Ruby My Dear” with JOHN BEASLEY, who received two Grammy nominations for his 15-piece big band MONKestra, performing a gorgeous rendition of Jobim’s “Bonita” with Grammy-nominated OTMARO RUIZ, the Venezuelan native known for his versatility and virtuosity, or tackling a jazzed up version of “America” with LLEW MATTHEWS, who has worked with luminaries such as Jackie McLean, Kenny Dorham, and Nancy Wilson.

Over her long career, Segal-Garcia has worked with each of these accomplished musicians in various venues around California. VARDAN OVSEPIAN, JANE GETZ, and GARY FUKISHIMA are all storied musicians with a long list of performance credits and recordings with many of the top names in jazz. Segal-Garcia decided to include additional textures to this CD by adding violin to two of her original compositions. Pianist KAREN HAMMACK and violinist/vocalist CALABRIA FOTI lend their sensitive approach and unique stylings to Segal-Garcia’s “Mary O’Shaunnessy,” which she co-wrote with her husband Gary Hoffman and is based on a real person they met on a trip to Ireland, and “The Room,” a sad tune she wrote in remembrance of a lost friend.

On IN2UITION, Segal-Garcia shows the versatility and command of the music that only a highly experienced jazz musician can manifest. A truly collaborative effort, IN2UITION is the latest musical snapshot of an artist who never settles for yesterday’s tropes.

Cathy dedicates this CD to her late twin sisters, Margy and Edie, whose picture appears on the cover of this CD.
